Description

25 years ago, I planted 16 arborvitae trees as a wind break along the western edge of my property ... they've since grown to over 14m tall.   Today, they are 100% effectiveness as a wind break and a barrier for astrophotography of any targets within 25° above the horizon to the southwest and west.    To see if I could image M17, I moved my scope from its normal location in center of my back yard to the northwest corner of my yard, which is right up agains my neighbor's fence.  It was a damp and thorn-invested location, but provided about 2-3 hrs of unobstructed imaging time between 10 pm and 12:30 am.

I was thrilled to collect 67 frames at 180s each (many more were ruined by clouds or rooftops) over three nights ...  the skies were mostly clear and moonless.   It's been a tough summer — we've had exceptionally smokey skies and rainy for much the past three months.  The rain has revived our aquifers, wetlands and ponds, to which I am grateful.    However, it's made it very difficult to get multiple nights on one target.
